The easiest habit for a healthier you

The easiest habit for a healthier you

Oh, and you’re already doing it…

I think we all wish there were some miracle potion that we could take to be healthier and feel better without putting the work in. Exercise and eating healthy takes some form of discipline and work. But there’s this forgotten and under-praised third of our lives. And it’s easier than taking a nap. Wait a minute – it is taking a nap. Sleeping does not require any work or effort. Yet, like physical exercise and healthy eating, sleep plays an enormous part in our physical and mental wellbeing. You’ll be surprised to learn just how much you actually do for your body and mind when you get sufficient sleep.

Since learning the benefits and effect sleep has on my body and mind, getting some shut-eye has been something I look forward to daily. Oh, and having a comfortable mattress made from quality material helps a lot.

So, here’s why sleep is so essential for your body, mind, and overall well-being.

Hormones & Bodyweight

Yes, that stuff that makes us go crazy at times, plays a significant role in multiple body functions essential for your health.

Your body releases essential hormones when you rest that help with everything from immune health to metabolism to your overall mood. That’s why less sleep is also linked to an increased appetite. (Told you this is the overlooked magic we’ve been dreaming of!)

Sharper Brain & Better Mood

We know, for example, that sleep is critical for waking cognition—that is, for the ability to think clearly, to be vigilant and alert, and sustain attention. We also know that memories are consolidated during sleep and that sleep serves a key role in emotional regulation. Science also suggests that quality sleep improves your mood, reduces stress, anxiety, and depression. (Is it time for bed already?!)

Healthy Immune system

Now getting back to the immune system, #rona, makes this topic an important one. Your immune system helps ward off illnesses; it identifies harmful bacteria and viruses in your body and destroys them. Ongoing lack of sleep changes the way your immune cells work. They may not attack as quickly, and you could get sick more often

Healthy energy levels and a zest for life

Can I see your hands in the air? Yes, we all want that! Energy levels after healthy sleep are higher, and your mental awareness is more acute. Good sleep is also tied to improved athletic performance, including higher speed, agility, and reflexes.

Ready, steady, GO!

Healthier Heart

While you sleep, your blood pressure goes down. This gives your heart and blood vessels a bit of a rest. The less sleep you get, the longer your blood pressure stays up during a 24-hour cycle. High blood pressure can lead to heart disease, including stroke. Go on – give your heart some rest 😉

So let’s go back to your bedroom. What changes can you make to make your space more cosy, inviting, and a calming haven where you can shut off from the world.

Here are my top tips for a bedroom that promotes better sleep

  • Ditch the electronics
  • Introduce soft light via candles or bedlamps
  • Invest in breathable linen that feels good to touch
  • Always open a window, even just a little for fresh airflow
  • Invest in a quality And I cannot state this enough. While sleep is so important, we spend thousands on electronics and a fancy ride, but often neglect investing in a quality mattress which we spend a dreamy amount of time on. Invest in a quality mattress that supports your spine and helps you get the quality shut-eye you deserve. (Remember a mattress should last you 15 or more years, so it’s worth every penny for your health & wellbeing.)
