Carrol Boyes and The Kolisi Foundation Celebrates Nelson Mandela Day 2020

This year, to honour the great Nelson Mandela, Carrol Boyes had the honour of partnering with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and The Kolisi Foundation at their Nelson Mandela Day event held at The Hemel and Aarde Brewery in Hermanus.

Due to COVID constraints, the forward-thinking brewery repurposed its equipment to produce soup and has undertaken to provide 27 000 meals from 16 – 18 July 2020 (Mandela Day) as part of The Brewers Soup Collective. The Carrol Boyes team were delighted to offer their 67-minutes to assist with the preparation of the vegetables for the weekend’s feeding scheme.

The Brewers Soup Collective

The Brewers Soup Collective is a non-profit organisation that repurposes South African breweries to feed those most in need with nutritious soup. Breweries nationwide were closed due to the national lockdown and as the government responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. A group of innovative brewers saw the potential to address the rapidly growing humanitarian hunger crisis. Mash tuns, usually used to make beer, are the ideal vessels to make large quantities of soup.

By repurposing breweries to produce soup, brewers are creating a sustainable feeding solution, retaining jobs and preventing the South African craft brewery industry from folding.

The Kolisi Foundation

Strategically aligned, The Kolisi Foundation’s vision is to ‘change the narrative of inequality for people in vulnerable and disadvantaged communities in South Africa’.

The Kolisi Foundation was established in March 2020 although its origins evolved through the roots of the Founders, Siya and Rachel Kolisi, experience upon experience, since 1990.

The Kolisi Foundation encompasses Siya and Rachel Kolisi’s heart in one project. The Kolisi duo has a vision to provide assistance and opportunities through partnerships – in areas where it is most needed.
