Gatehouse: One-stop decor shop

Founded in 1985, Mavromac has grown in leaps and bounds over the years, from a stockist of premium fabrics and wall coverings to a one-stop decor shop that includes the company’s extension, Gatehouse.

“Gatehouse was developed to meet the growing demand for strong, locally produced, design-conscious ranges. Believing in South African designs and traditional craftsmanship, Gatehouse invested in skilled local ironmongers, carpenters, French polishers and upholsterers,” explains the company.

Today, Gatehouse stocks a beautiful selection of high-end furniture, including beds, tables, chairs and stools, cabinets and consoles, many produced locally by skilled employees.

This includes the company’s range of outdoor furniture, which was designed in collaboration with architect Jo van Niekerk and is exclusively produced in South Africa. 

“About seven years ago I made the decision to produce locally instead of importing. We have an amazing amount of untapped talent in our country that needs a chance to flourish. So we started our in-house manufacturing operation, with a focus on quality and uniqueness,” explains owner Hanneke Swart.

Inspired by our fine climate and the outdoor lifestyle we enjoy in South Africa, the collection of blonde-wood, slim-lined, contemporary outdoor furniture includes the comfy Cuban Lounger, a rocking chair – perfect for watching sunsets on the stoep – and the Muizenberg Deck Chair – all crafted from solid oak treated to withstand the elements and with custom fabric options available.

“We have taken what we believe in most and what we love most in design to create something that is uniquely us – designed and made right here,” says Hanneke.
