Head on Design: Modern African trends
Joanna Orr of Head On Design and Cape Town artist, Sharon Boonzaier have once again joined forces to create a new range of wall décor sculptures printed in a style that is typically embracing of modern African trends — an exciting collaboration that continues to evolve.
Tribal
Launched at Decorex Cape Town in June, this beautiful ‘Tribal’ Kudu sculpture is inspired by themes of our natural Southern African heritage; majestic African wildlife alongside rich cultural patterns and flowing fabrics. Elephants roam while leopards observe quietly from a high branch.
And then there’s the playful ‘Paradise’ Kudu, inspired by our unique proteas and birds found on the slopes of Table Mountain, voted a natural wonder of the world. See striking orange-breasted sunbirds flitting about, trying to impress.
Paradise Kudu
Sharon has certainly not held back this season; her colours are fun and exciting, bold and brave.
Rather than using technology, Joanna prefers to approach each new design artistically. She cuts tiny paper models by hand and, once perfected, the final version of the sculpture can be produced in various sizes.
Depending on space, or budget requirements, one can choose to go with a medium-sized kudu head in birch ply, varnished with eco-friendly wax varnish, or the smaller mini kudu, made from recycled paperboard, all sustainable materials to save our precious forests.
