Dulux: Spruce up your Kitchen in Five Easy Steps
Warm and sunny days are upon us and with that comes good food and fun. Spending time in a beautiful kitchen is what can help put the joy back into entertaining loved ones. So, here are a few tips with inspiration from the experts at Dulux to help you spruce up the heart of your home.
Clean the walls
Kitchen walls and surfaces are often greasy so the first advice from Dulux Experts is that before you tackle your kitchen renovations and start painting, it’s important to clean all surfaces thoroughly to ensure that you get a good finish. The best way to do this is to clean them down with sugar soap or a strong detergent solution. Use warm water and thoroughly rinse off all residue before allowing the surfaces to dry.
Prepare the room
Before starting to paint, Dulux recommends that you cover the edges of any tiles, appliances, trim and worktops with masking tape. This will help you to create a clean, crisp edge to the painted surface. It’s best to also cover worktops, appliances and the floor with a plastic sheet to catch any drips.
“Depending on the style that you want to achieve, choose a colour palette that evokes your desired theme. Using the Dulux Visualizer App can help you picture it before you paint it,” says Dulux Colour Expert, Palesa Ramaisa.
“The vibrant shades in the Dulux Buzz palette celebrate the biodiversity of a wildflower field. For a vibrant look consider adding a splash of bright colour to a wall painted in the Colour of the Year 2023, Wild Wonder™, creating a joyful family space that feels energizing and invigorating for the hot summer days ahead,” adds Ramaisa.
Start from the top
As with any room, start painting your kitchen from the ceiling down, so that any paint drips don’t fall onto freshly painted surfaces. For ceilings and walls, use kitchen paint as these are hard-wearing and designed to be wiped down easily like Dulux Easy Care. Vinyl paint can be used on ceilings as they don’t need washing as regularly. You may find it easier to paint edges with a brush rather than a roller.
Painting kitchen doors
If you feel like a total refresh without renovation, you could try giving kitchen cabinet doors a pop of paint, it’s easiest to remove them first. Clean them with sugar soap or detergent, then fill any gouges or nicks in the doors with wood filler, before sanding the areas and wiping them down.
“Depending on the surface, it may be worth using a special etching primer such as Dulux Supergrip followed by two coats of Dulux Pearlglo water-based enamel for a tough durable satin finish”, says Ramaisa.
Paint woodwork
Finish all cabinet woodwork. Paint from top to bottom, starting with the windows – it’s best to begin painting in the morning so that they have a full day to dry before they need to be closed in the evening. Next, paint the door, door frame and architrave, followed by the skirting. By painting the skirting last, there is less risk of your brush becoming contaminated by dirt or dust.
No matter your style and level of revamp, these décor ideas can help you make the most of warmer days with your loved ones.
