Renowned for its contributions to the South African design lexicon, Cape Town-based furniture design studio Haldane Martin is well-known and loved for its range of premium lighting and outdoor furniture.

Established by acclaimed furniture designer Haldane Martin, all of the studio’s pieces carry Martin’s distinctive design signature and commitment to manufacturing innovation.

“We foster enduring connections with nature through our design-driven range of outdoor furnishings,” says the studio. “Our small-batch, made-to-order collections feature a high degree of end-user customisation for authentic self-expression.”

Building on the studio’s legacy, Martin and his partner, Danielle, recently opened a new studio showroom in Salt River, Cape Town.

Like the furniture created by one of the mavericks of South African design, the new showroom is a thoroughly contemporary re-interpretation of an old space, redesigned by Martin himself.

“With a tight budget and an even tighter timeline, Haldane did all the renovation design, working with landlord Ryan Joffe and an impressive roster of local tradesmen to bring the building to its former glory – with an on-brand outdoor twist, of course,” says Danielle.

“Our friend, architect Jon Jacobsen, shared his expertise with us informally; his input was invaluable. He encouraged us to choose flooring that resonates with us and to be our bold selves when it came to colour.”

“Because it is a physical manifestation of our brand, we aimed to create a large-scale environment that is beautiful yet humble, with generous proportions and a free-flowing atmosphere,” adds Martin. 

Visitors to the showroom can also look forward to some new designs, including the studio’s Galapagos outdoor kitchen island, a new sofa addition to the Contour collection and Dombolo coffee tables.
