The Cape Gallery: Fleur au Soleil
Fleur au Soleil – a solo exhibition by Roelof Rossouw recently opened on 13th January 2019. Work will be on view until Saturday, 2nd February 2019.
“Before I became successful my mother suggested that I paint flowers, meaning as in a still life. I told her that I was not interested, but then later I was inspired to paint flowers in sunlight, as in a garden. Since then I have often painted gardens that belong to private homes, universities, parks, wine farms and botanical gardens. The most important garden being the enclosed “Jardin de Iris” of the Paris Botanical Garden where I painted plein air studies for two days one June.
With this exhibition I want to take my painting to the next level of impressionism, freeing myself more from the restraints of realistic representation. By reducing unnecessary detail I focus the attention on the shapes and juxtaposition of colour. Lately I have been painting with round-tipped palette knives in order to paint with less control and accuracy. The blending of colour nuances and soft edges is what I am striving for.”
Roelof was born in 1957, and grew up in Benoni, near Johannesburg. A painter of figures, city and landscapes, street scenes, boats and harbours, architecture, parks and gardens. He works mainly in oils, but also collage and acrylic. Rossouw has travelled widely and has visited Europe, The British Isles, Middle East, USA, Singapore, Australia, Canada, Zanzibar and The Caribbean (with painting vacations in Italy, France, Ukraine and USA)
