Hansgrohe: Grey Water Recycling for Sustainable Showering Pleasure

Two years ago, the “Green Vision” bathroom concept presented by the Hansgrohe Group caused quite a stir. The frequently asked question was when the futuristic bathroom with up to 90% less water and energy consumption would be launched on the market.

“We see our Green Vision as an inspiring invitation to rethink our use of water in everyday life and to develop resource-saving solutions together,” says Hans Jürgen Kalmbach, CEO Hansgrohe Group. “We turn parts of the concept into reality for our customers with an experienced partner: At the upcoming ISH trade fair in Frankfurt, visitors will be able to experience Hydraloop’s grey water recycling solution live at our stand in the Festhalle.”

In fact, the idea of multiple uses of water has already appeared in the Green Vision bathroom: shower water was used again to flush the toilet. Building on this vision, the Hansgrohe Group is now partnering with the award-winning scale-up Hydraloop from the Netherlands to introduce an advanced greywater recycling system. Hansgrohe is long committed to sustainable water management, having previously offered greywater recycling systems under the Pontos brand between 2003 and 2011. Pontos was a pioneering solution that allowed the efficient reuse of water.

With Hydraloop’s cutting-edge technology, Hansgrohe takes the next step in graywater recycling, integrating modern advancements such as IoT connectivity, minimal maintenance, and enhanced system efficiency. The compact, cabinet-sized treatment system collects wastewater from showers, bathtubs, washing machines, and condensation water from heat pumps, air conditioning systems and tumble dryers, known as grey water, and cleans and disinfects it in an innovative biological process.

The result is high quality, certified recycled water suitable for non-potable applications like toilet flushing, garden irrigation, and washing machines. “Striking a balance between user experience, efficiency, resource conservation and regulatory requirements is a challenge. More and more green building certifications require building  projects to meet sustainability criteria for planning permission,” explains Hans Jürgen Kalmbach.

“We are convinced that this effective and reliable solution will enable us to tap into the potential of greywater recycling at the right time, especially for hotels, public and semi- public buildings and all construction projects that focus on sustainability. We also advocate increasing multiple usage of water on a political level. Circulatory solutions in buildings in which different qualities of water are used for different purposes offer enormous potential. To exploit this, the regulatory framework must be adapted to enable innovation.”

Cooperation as an Innovation and Marketing Accelerator Broadening one's horizons – a maxim that company founder Hans Grohe also followed – and by collaborating with innovative and dynamic partners, the Hansgrohe Group promotes the development of new, pioneering water technologies and their rapid market launch. In this way, the company is expanding its innovative strength and positions itself as a pioneer in the field of sustainable solutions to take decisive action against the water and energy crisis.

“We are tapping into innovative and sustainable product areas. In the “Sustainable Living” area at our ISH trade fair booth, we will show what these are with a look into the future. We will be presenting innovative technologies for water recycling, heat recovery and drinking water optimisation that help to reduce our ecological footprint in everyday life,” says Hans Juergen Kalmbach.

“Showering is about much more than physical hygiene – it’s also a moment of mental renewal. To ensure that this feel good experience does not come at the expense of valuable resources, we combine innovative water-saving technologies with systemic solutions, such as in our collaboration product with Hydraloop to rethink sustainable water consumption without compromising on design and comfort.”
