Lafrique Studios: Black -and-white photography

A classic – and striking – form of art, black-and-white photography is as popular today as it was when first introduced as a mainstream creative medium in the 1920s.

From fashion and architecture to portraits and wildlife scenes, black-and-white photography covers a vast range of subjects and styles, making it a great option for decorating interiors.

“We adore it for its chameleon-like capacity to adapt to its surroundings,” says Lafrique Studios of the lasting popularity of the art form.

To create a distinctive and stylish display, keep the following in mind.

Contrast is key

While a monochrome scheme may be striking in a minimalist way, a vibrant backdrop can make black-and-white photo art stand out even more.

Think about a vivid paint colour or coloured and/or patterned wallpaper to offset photography.

Bigger is better

One of the advantages of decorating with photographic art is the ability to blow up images to create large prints that can be used as a focal point in a room.

“These enlarged versions of these art pieces, with every line and detail of boldness, results in a design that’s both evocative and captivating,” explains Lafrique Studios, suggesting clients vary the size, scale and subject matter of their black-and-white images and make an oversized print that dominates a section of a wall.

Use it to highlight architectural details

While large photographic works can be used to draw the eye to a specific area or influence the flow of a room, it can also be employed to complement the architectural details.

“Hanging artwork on top of moulding is one of our favourite decorating hacks for spaces with intricate architectural characteristics. It’s a move that provides a more informal atmosphere without covering up or detracting from the architecture,” says Lafrique Studio

It doesn’t have to go on the wall

When it comes to decorating with black-and-white photography, keep in mind that all the photos do not have to be hung on the wall – casually leaning framed artwork against a wall or shelf is another way of decorating a space, one that will deliver a relaxed, informal look and feel.

Customise your collection with unique snaps

A great way to build a truly unique collection of art is to add black-and-white family photos to the mix. Combine professional photographic works of art and family photographs for a special display.

Lafrique Studios stocks a wide selection of fine black-and-white photographic art.
