The Cape Gallery: My Grand Tour with Annari Van Der Merwe
To be introduced by Vernon Head on Sunday 28 October 2018 at 4.30 pm, the solo exhibition by Annari Van Der Merwe heads to the Cape Gallery and can be viewed until Saturday 4 November.
Annari grew up in the beckoning canvasses of the great Karoo where the subtle colours, vast, gentle shapes and clean lines formed her emotional and aesthetic inner landscape.
She studied literature in Port Elizabeth, and with a PhD on the poetry of Breyten Breytenbach, she became immersed in academia, working at Rhodes University and the Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht in the Netherlands. She then established her career in South Africa, instrumental in founding Kwela Books for Naspers, a forerunner of Umzi, now an imprint of Penguin Random House.
In 2014, she committed herself to painting under the mentorship of Greg Kerr.
Journeys have been part of Annari’s life since her earliest memories. With her love of travelling – any opportunity, all free time and every loose penny were grabbed and turned into a trip to yet another undiscovered destination. Besides the passing parade almost every port of call offered art galleries and museums to explore. Annari’s literary interests and editorial experiences have lead her to subjects that focus on the creative sensibility and the approach of master artists to their work, and to the process of making art itself. She is intrigued by the visual potential of everyday objects, as well as the timelessness of great works of art.
Don’t miss out on Annari’s exhibition this month at The Cape Gallery.
