The Fluted Tile Trend with Stiles
Our brains like texture. We crave irregular surfaces. Perhaps it’s a throwback to our caveman ancestry and the need to define objects by touch. Who can resist the tactile sensation of running their fingers across the veins on the back of a leaf, the whorls on a seashell or the raised bumps on the back of a tortoise? Texture invites us to see surfaces with more than our eyes. Discover more with Stiles.
Refined relief patterns are slowly creeping into luxurious interiors and unique, multifaceted tiles are offer opportunities to create magnetic spaces. The ‘relief tile’ is bending modern tiles into the curved patterns of wind-blown sand and the rippled textures of a wave-carved seabed. Tile surfaces with fluted, curved, ridged and pointed surfaces have found their way into the Funky Tile range at Stiles and they are having a glorious moment in exclusive interiors.
Relief tiles are characterized by interesting three-dimensional surfaces. These tiles add a sense of movement through their surface profiles, playing with shadow, light, and tactility.
Stiles’ chief executive officer, Steve Joubert, recently visited Cevisama, a Spanish trade fair showcasing leading global trends in ceramic, bathroom equipment, and natural stone. Meeting with international suppliers and monitoring innovations in the sector, Steve commented: “Relief finishes really stood out, with fluted patterns proving to be very popular in all types of looks, from wood to marble. It was the most popular wall finish on display.”
Relief details can make a space more luxurious and decadent and can be used to add character into a space. Bathroom designers are particularly picking up on the wood-look trend. Relief ‘wood effect’ tiles present a practical and visually appealing way to incorporate a ridged wood look into spaces where humidity and moisture can be a problem for real wood. Cifre Ceramica‘s Jarel decorative wall tiles mimic trendy wood paneling with regular narrow ridges and are available in an oak, walnut and wengue wood finishes.
The Matiz Range from Stiles Funky Tiles offers a captivating and contemporary relief finish with a slightly glossy finish. The tile surface has a low triangular prism profile and produces the illusion of a subtle stripe. They can be applied on a modern kitchen, bathroom or utility backsplash or a sophisticated vanity. These subway tiles can be laid vertically to emphasize the height of a space or horizontally to expand a small or confined wall. The bright and modern colours including pastels inspired by the art of painting. The eight colours include sandy beige, white, delicate pink, sea green, orange and blue.
The Cuore My C Deluxe range from Stiles Funky Tiles feature classical curvaceous surfaces. The rounded fluted pattern is reminiscent of ancient Greek and Roman architecture where circular forms and dramatic surfaces dominate. The Cuore tiles have a gloss finish and are suitable for daring indoor and outdoor applications such as braai areas, fireplace surrounds, and characterful commercial or office spaces. This type of tile is increasingly used to create fluted bases for kitchen islands or bathroom vanities.
