Mash T Launches New Pendant Lights in Alignment with Xhosa Cultural Traditions
As part of a commitment to celebrating the rich cultural tapestry of South Africa, Mash T is introducing a new product line of pendant light fixtures that draw inspiration from the shapes commonly found in rural areas across the country.
The Xhosa people, one of the Bantu ethnic groups in South Africa, have their own way of labelling seasons or months. Traditional Xhosa calendars are often based on natural events, agricultural activities, and celestial occurrences rather than a fixed Gregorian calendar. The naming of months or seasons is deeply connected to their region’s agricultural and climatic changes.
In Xhosa culture, summer is a season of abundance, growth, and celebration. It’s a time when communities come together to partake in various activities. The longer days provide the perfect canvas for festivities. The new pendant light fixtures from Mash T, inspired by the lively shapes in rural landscapes, aim to capture the essence of this vibrant season.
These unique pendant light fixtures are crafted from telewire, showcasing the exceptional skill of artisans from the KwaZulu region. By incorporating this traditional craft into our designs, we not only pay homage to the rich heritage of South Africa but also support local communities and preserve the artistry that defines the cultural identity of the region.
The designs delved into the architectural heritage of rural South African homes, exploring structures that have stood the test of time and embody a profound connection to the land. The shapes incorporated into these pendant light fixtures pay homage to the enduring structures that have shaped the landscapes of our beautiful country.
As an example, take the Ronta pendant (inspired by circular dwellings), commonly observed in regions like the Eastern Cape. The circular form holds dual significance in its shape. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the circular design symbolizes unity and community, fostering a sense of togetherness among inhabitants. This timeless design also offers practical benefits, allowing for efficient air circulation and optimal use of space.
We invite you to explore this new collection that not only illuminates spaces but also tells a story of craftsmanship, heritage, and the timeless beauty of our nation at Mash T – Design Studio
