Behind the Scenes with the Owner of My Hares and Graces

Today we have the honour of hearing from artist and owner of My Hares and Graces, Carol Slabolepszy, who creates beautiful life-size sculptures of animals with a gentle presence which will enliven your home or garden…

Tell us a little more about your creations…

Over the past 12 years I have created 36 different animals and I still love the challenge of portraying the essence of my subject, whether it is a hare, cat, dog or Pangolin and strive to capture them in a moment of unguarded stillness or quiet alertness. They have been described as sculptures with soul.

What is the process of creation like?

I begin the sculpture with an idea of a gesture and the process is an organic one. The mood of the animal reveals itself as I progress and become familiar with the shapes, lines and textures of the animal.

What materials do you use?

All my works are sculpted in clay using photographic and real-life references as well as my imagination. A silicone mould is then made over the clay and the animal is cold cast with a blend of acrylic resin, pigments, metal powder or marble dust.

Where would these ideally be placed?

While my sculptures are weather-proof they are not ‘water-proof’ and are happy indoors and out; they just need a bit more care and attention if they are outside.

What makes your sculptures unique?

Every one of my sculptures contains a numbered microchip, identifying it as one of my original pieces -the same used for a family pet. The random sequence of numbers can be read by your local vet (if you want a giggle)- a fun combination of technology and fine art.

Have you had any interesting projects and collaborations that stand out for you?

I enjoy collaborating and have had many opportunities to meet and work with new people. One of my favourite collaborations was with Kobisia Interiors in Dullstroom – creating a lamp of a hare running with a light bulb under its arm that is called Eish!

Gift yourself or a loved one a precious memento with a beautiful sculpture from My Hares and Graces.
