Paul Smith and Gufram
Synonymous with harsh desert landscapes, and known for their extraordinary ability to survive in these arid conditions, it’s no surprise that cacti are a symbol of determination for many.
It’s exactly this resilience that Paul Smith and Gufram wanted to capture with the reinterpretation of the Cactus design, the iconic piece originally designed by Guido Drocco and Franco Mello in 1972.
The latest rendition, titled Sunrise Cactus, was inspired by the dawning of a new day and Paul Smith’s saying ‘Every day is a new beginning’.
Sunrises are also an important symbol of renewal in nature, representing hope and transformation, which is why it is so fitting that the design coincides with the reopening of the newly renovated iconic Paul Smith on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles.
A symbol of resilience, cacti thrive in harsh conditions and represent a willingness to grow and evolve. As such it represents a metaphorical new sunrise for Paul Smith in Los Angeles, a new beginning for the brand.
“It’s always such a pleasure to work with a team as creative and passionate as the one at
Gufram,” explains Smith of the collaboration.
“The Cactus is obviously an icon of 1970s design – from the same decade that I started my own business – and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to put my own spin on it once again.”
Gradually transitioning from yellow to orange, pink and morning sky blue, the Sunrise Cactus reflects the natural palette of sunrises in LA.
Made from the same mould as the original Cactus, the latest versions each consist of 2,165 polyurethane bosses that are fitted and painted by hand with Guflac (Gufram’s patented paint that allows it to remain flexible and soft) in seven different hues that are blurred on the surface to achieve the effect designed by Smith.
The limited collection consists of 169 unique hand-finished pieces.
