Plascon House Tour: A Charming Country House
Today’s blissful Connecticut home is a charming country house with a history that spans to the late 1700’s. Designed by Sheena Murphy and Tor Sauder from nune, this historic residence is serene, filled with eclectic and vintage finds and a tranquil white-on-white design scheme.
In keeping with the historic architecture of the home, designers chose muted tones and a mix of materials to highlight the interiors. It was important that the cottage retain many of its original features, such as exposed structural beams.
In the formal living room, luxe materials were used, such as velvet, suede and brass. This adds to the eclectic feel of the space. These also create a contrast with the primitive wood and rough cotton textiles found throughout this room.
Designer Sheena Murphy elaborates: “The age and character of the house demanded an eclecticism that others we’ve worked on haven’t. You have more freedom to mix what you want, as long as you unify things with a consistent tone and palette.”
In the kitchen, the white-on-white scheme continues, connecting this space to the rest of the home. The bespoke kitchen cabinetry was designed by Frances Mildred. A large white farmhouse sink, vintage chairs and an oversized table give the space added charm.
The home called for an interesting mix of furniture and vintage pieces to echo the overall feel of the building. Looking to play with materials, shapes and genres, all within a soothing colour scheme, the designers left no stone unturned in their search for different pieces, scouring flea markets and designer-makers, both nationally and worldwide.
The muted colour palette extends into the bedrooms where white walls and bedding create a fresh and relaxing ambience. Dark wood floors bring a contemporary farmhouse feel to these rooms. Designers opted for a calm and casual design approach. The end result is a charming country house that feels lived in and timeless.
