Winter Home Styling Ideas: Create Calm, Comfort and Meaningful Interiors This Season
Winter has a way of changing the rhythm of a home. The days begin a little more slowly, evenings encourage us to linger indoors, and familiar spaces take on a greater sense of comfort and meaning. According to interior designer Toni-Anne van der Meulen, founder of Tones – Spaces with Soul, this quieter season offers the perfect opportunity to reconnect not only with our homes, but with ourselves.
For Toni-Anne, July carries a particularly special significance. Nestled in the heart of winter – and marking her birthday month – it is a time to pause, reflect and embrace gentle renewal before the energy of spring begins to emerge.
“July is winter’s invitation to pause long enough to hear your own heart again,” she says. “Just as the earth rests before spring’s awakening, we too are allowed to slow down, gather ourselves, and celebrate how far we’ve come.”
Rather than undertaking major renovations or dramatic seasonal updates, Toni-Anne encourages homeowners to introduce small rituals that quietly transform the atmosphere of a space. Lighting a candle before the day begins, opening a window for a few moments of fresh winter air, bringing branches or winter blooms indoors, or rearranging a favourite corner can all create a renewed sense of calm.
She also suggests styling a shelf with objects that reflect the life you hope to create, placing a handwritten intention beneath a favourite plant, or simply replacing clutter with something beautiful that invites you to slow down and appreciate the space around you.
These thoughtful gestures reflect the philosophy that underpins Tones – Spaces with Soul, where interiors are designed not simply to look beautiful, but to feel deeply personal and connected to the people who inhabit them. With more than three decades of experience across graphic and interior design, Toni-Anne approaches every project with the belief that colour, texture and carefully chosen objects shape not only the appearance of a room, but also the way it is experienced.
Sometimes, transforming a home doesn’t begin with changing the space. It begins by changing the way we live within it.
