Designing Homes with Heart: Styleast on Creating Timeless, Personal Interiors

Styleast believes the most memorable interiors are never defined by trends alone, but by the people who call them home. With more than 15 years of experience across South Africa and London, the studio has built a reputation for creating refined, highly personal spaces that balance timeless aesthetics with the realities of everyday living. From complete turnkey renovations and new builds to thoughtfully layered interiors that prioritise wellbeing, functionality and individuality, every project is guided by a deep understanding of how clients want to live. In this exclusive interview,   Bridget Meier from Styleast shares its design philosophy, the value of creating homes with lasting meaning, and why the future of interior design lies not in following trends, but in telling authentic stories through beautifully considered spaces.

1. Styleast is known for creating interiors that are both aesthetically beautiful and deeply personal. How do you ensure that every project reflects the personality and lifestyle of your client rather than simply following current design trends?

I think one of the biggest mistakes people make is designing a home for everyone else instead of themselves.

Social media has given us endless inspiration, which is wonderful, but it’s also made it very easy to create homes that all start looking the same. My goal is always the opposite.

Before we even start talking about furniture or finishes, I want to understand my clients. How do they spend their weekends? Do they love entertaining? Do they read? Cook? Have young children? Do they want a home that feels calm and peaceful or vibrant and energetic? Those answers shape the design far more than any trend ever could.

I always say that trends come and go, but personality never goes out of fashion. The homes that people remember are the ones that feel authentic. I want someone to walk into a home and immediately get a sense of the people who live there—their story, their lifestyle and what they love.

2. With more than 15 years of industry experience across South Africa and London, how has your design philosophy evolved, and what influences continue to inspire your work today?

When I first started designing, I was definitely more focused on creating beautiful spaces. And don’t get me wrong—I still want every project to be beautiful. But over the years I’ve realised that beauty alone isn’t enough.

The homes that stay with me are the ones that genuinely improve the way people live.

Today, I’m far more interested in how a home feels than simply how it looks. Does it encourage people to slow down? Does it make everyday life easier? Does it bring people together? Does it create little moments of joy? To me, that’s what great design is really about.

I truly believe that creativity inspires creativity. I love travelling, wandering through galleries, discovering beautiful architecture, and eating beautiful restaurants . It’s not only about the food but it’s the atmosphere, the lighting, the materials, the music and the feeling the space creates. The more I surround myself with creativity, the more it shapes the way I see the world. Those experiences don’t just inspire individual projects, they continually shape me as a designer.

But honestly, my biggest inspiration is still my clients. Every family lives differently, every business has its own personality, and that’s what keeps every project fresh, personal and exciting.

3. Your studio offers a complete turnkey design service, from concept development through to installation. What do you believe are the greatest advantages of this holistic approach for homeowners embarking on a renovation or new build?

Building or renovating a home is incredibly exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. There are hundreds of decisions to make, countless suppliers and contractors involved, and it’s very easy for the original vision to get lost along the way.

For me, one of the most exciting parts of what we do is being involved from start to finish. We get to dream up an idea with our clients, sketch it out, develop it, source every detail and then watch it slowly come to life. There’s something really magical about taking an idea that only existed in conversations, sketches and mood boards, and months later standing in a completed home that’s exactly as we’d imagined it.

Watching our clients walk through the front door for the first time and seeing their reaction is honestly one of my favourite parts of the job. It never gets old.

From a client’s perspective, having one studio guide the entire process means every decision feels connected. The design remains true to the original vision, nothing feels pieced together, and there’s someone looking after all the moving parts so the experience is far less stressful.

It’s a real privilege to be part of such an important chapter in our clients’ lives, and seeing them begin making memories in a space we’ve created together is incredibly rewarding.

4. Today’s homeowners are seeking spaces that are not only beautiful but also practical and emotionally uplifting. What are some of the key design principles you believe every successful interior should incorporate?

I think we’ve moved beyond designing homes that simply look beautiful in photographs. People want homes that make them feel something.

For me, good design always starts with functionality because if a home doesn’t work well, it doesn’t matter how beautiful it is. From there it’s about layering the space with natural light, texture, thoughtful lighting, quality materials and creating a sense of balance.

As you know there is a huge shift at the moment towards Wellbeing. Clients want homes that feel calm, comfortable and restorative. They want spaces where they can disconnect from busy lives and genuinely enjoy being at home.

And finally, I think every home needs personality. Books, artwork, collected pieces from travels, family heirlooms – these are the things that bring soul into a space. They’re what stop a house from feeling like a showroom.

I always encourage clients to ask themselves one question before making any design decision: “How do I want to live?”Once you know the answer to that, the design decisions become so much easier.

5. Looking ahead, what emerging trends, materials, or lifestyle shifts do you believe will have the greatest impact on residential interior design in South Africa over the next few years, and how is Styleast responding to these changes?

Ironically, I think one of the biggest trends is actually moving away from trends.

People are becoming much more intentional about the homes they’re creating. They’re looking for longevity instead of fast-changing fashion, quality over quantity, and homes that reflect who they are rather than what’s popular online.

We’re also seeing a continued appreciation for natural materials, handcrafted pieces, layered textures and locally made products. Sustainability is becoming less of a buzzword and more of an everyday consideration, which I think is a really positive shift.

At Styleast, these shifts couldn’t be more aligned with what we’ve always believed. We’ve never wanted to create homes that look like everyone else’s. We want to create homes that tell our clients’ stories and continue to feel relevant years down the line.

If I could leave homeowners with one piece of advice, it would be this: stop asking, “What’s trending?” and start asking, “How do I want to live?” I honestly believe that’s where the best design begins.
