The Urbanative Unveils the Ntombi Accent Lamp: Contemporary African Design Meets Sculptural Lighting

The Urbanative continues its exploration of contemporary African design with the introduction of the Ntombi Accent Lamp, the newest addition to its celebrated Nokukhanya Collection. Making its debut as part of Decorex Cape Town’s prestigious Ten x Ten exhibition, the sculptural piece reflects the studio’s ongoing commitment to transforming cultural narratives into refined contemporary design.

Named after the isiZulu word for “girl”, the Ntombi Accent Lamp draws inspiration from the graceful silhouette of the traditional isidwaba skirt. Rather than simply referencing heritage, the design reinterprets it through a modern lens, allowing familiar forms to evolve into something both timeless and distinctly contemporary.

Crafted from layered marble, powder-coated steel, and natural ash, the lamp introduces a rich new material expression to the Nokukhanya Collection. The considered combination of textures balances weight with lightness, creating an object that possesses equal visual impact whether illuminated or standing quietly within an interior. Both functional and sculptural, the Ntombi Accent Lamp demonstrates how lighting can transcend utility to become an architectural presence in its own right.

For founder and Creative Director Mpho Vackier, each new design represents a continuation of an ongoing dialogue rather than a recreation of the past.

“What interests us isn’t recreating the past, but continuing the conversation. Every collection begins with a story, and through making, that story evolves, finding new expression through material, form and the spaces they inhabit.”

This philosophy has become central to The Urbanative’s growing body of work, where craftsmanship, cultural heritage, and contemporary design exist in thoughtful balance. Each collection builds upon the last, revisiting familiar forms to uncover new possibilities while celebrating the richness of African design languages.

Presented within Decorex Cape Town’s Ten x Ten exhibition, the Ntombi Accent Lamp joins one of the year’s most anticipated design showcases, where it stands among 100 carefully curated objects representing the creativity, craftsmanship, and innovation shaping contemporary African design. It is a fitting stage for a piece that quietly demonstrates how meaningful storytelling and considered craftsmanship continue to define the future of design.
