A Timeless Mediterranean Residence Designed by Sandrine Sarah Faivre
Perched above the Mediterranean on the prestigious slopes of Roucas Blanc, Villa Alta appears to belong effortlessly to its surroundings. Framed by uninterrupted views across Marseille, the Frioul Islands and the distant Tiboulen de Maïre, the residence is as much a response to its remarkable setting as it is an expression of contemporary architecture. Designed by interior designer Sandrine Sarah Faivre, the home reflects a shared vision between designer and homeowner, shaped by a mutual appreciation for timeless architecture, natural materials, and a way of living that places equal value on comfort and beauty.
The commission followed the successful restoration of the neighbouring caretaker’s house, Les Rossignols, after which Faivre was invited to imagine a contemporary family residence for the highest point of the estate. Over the next three years, the project evolved into a complete architectural and interior design journey, encompassing everything from the spatial planning and material palette to the bespoke furniture, lighting, artworks, and decorative finishes.
A defining influence throughout the project was Brazilian modernism. Inspired by the work of architects such as Márcio Kogan and Isay Weinfeld, the design embraces the effortless relationship between architecture and landscape that has become synonymous with contemporary Brazilian homes. Large openings dissolve the boundaries between inside and out, allowing sunlight, sea breezes and panoramic Mediterranean views to become integral elements of everyday living.
Rather than competing with its extraordinary surroundings, the interiors provide a calm architectural framework. Natural materials, generous volumes and a restrained palette create spaces that feel warm, tactile, and quietly sophisticated. Carefully selected furnishings and contemporary artworks introduce personality, while layered textures soften the home’s clean architectural lines, ensuring each room feels welcoming rather than formal.
Designed for a family who enjoys both entertaining and quieter moments together, Villa Alta balances openness with intimacy. The layout flows naturally between communal and private spaces, adapting effortlessly to everything from lively gatherings to peaceful afternoons overlooking the sea.
Although rooted in the landscape of southern France, Villa Alta speaks a distinctly international design language. Mediterranean light, Brazilian architectural thinking, and a highly personalised approach come together to create a residence that feels timeless rather than trend-driven. It is a home that celebrates its setting, embraces everyday life, and demonstrates that the most enduring luxury is found in spaces designed to be lived in, not simply admired.
